375,000 Meals and Counting

The YWCA SGV operates the meal sites in 20 Senior Centers that serve 225,000 meals annually, and we home-deliver another 150,000 meals each year. Senior Services program staff are augmented by over 300 trained volunteers who work at congregate meal sites, deliver meals, provide friendly visits, and develop trusting relationships with seniors as they assess their safety and risk factors. The full safety net of services includes urgent case management, outreach, education, counseling, nutrition through congregate dining and home-delivered meals, transportation assistance, social enrichment opportunities, linkages to exercise, short-term housekeeping and homemaking services, and referrals to necessary medical care and other supports that reduce hunger, isolation, neglect, abuse, homelessness and forced institutionalization of seniors.

The Senior Services Program was started in 1986 to provide community-based services for low-income, homebound and/or frail elderly persons in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys. For 23 years, the program continued to grow in response to community needs. Originally serving three cities, the Senior Services Program now covers nearly all of eastern Los Angeles County, reaching over 40 communities and 7,000 people annually. Each community receives high quality, cost-effective and custom-tailored services that enable and empower older adults of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to enrich their lives and remain in their own homes with independence and dignity.
